My favorite sweater… Contain your shock, it’s a turtleneck. 🤪
A few weeks ago, I was chatting with one of my girlfriends, and she suggested that I do a post on THE turtleneck. At first, I sort of brushed it off because it’s been on the blog before, but when I did a little search, there were only four posts with my beloved turtleneck, none of which where I even write the love note it deserves. I thought, “How is this possible?? I literally wear it at least once a week.” So here we are.
(You can see those previous posts here: Hair Wand Tutorial, How to Survive a Chicago Winter, Weekend Wear, Black on Black with Pops of White)
In the last two weeks since I shot these photos to post, unfortunately, the sweater went on sale and now the black color is sold out — go figure! But there are a few similar styles by the brand, and it’s a style that they bring back year after year, so I figured it was still worth sharing.
And I wanted to show off my new dad sneakers… 😉👟
I NEVER thought I would get on board with the dad sneaker trend. And truth be told, I still hate most of the all-white pairs I see. (They’re pretty heinous, am I right?!) But when I saw this pair from Tretorn with the pink, green, and yellow, I was oddly super into them! I think they’re trendy, but not overly “dad-like,” and I love the lift they give me when I’m wearing them. (Platforms FTW!) They make for great travel day shoes with frayed black jeans or even leggings. And when the weather warms up, I can’t wait to wear them with a tee-shirt dress and a denim jacket!
But back to the sweater! As I’ve gotten older, my skin has gotten more and more sensitive every year. I can’t wear sweaters that have any type of wool in them, which actually makes it pretty difficult to find a good sweater. (For any sweater you see on the blog, always know that it is 1000% not itchy! Between my sensitive skin, allergies, and anxiety when I feel itchy, I can’t do cuteness over comfort when it comes to sweaters.) For me, it’s either cotton or cashmere. And if I’m not investing in a new cashmere sweater, it’s pretty hard to find cotton sweaters (that are still thick and warm!) in the winter in Chicago. (FYI: If you’re in the same boat, I usually have some luck at Old Navy earlier in the season!)
Enter the 525 America Cotton Sweaters!
525 America has a big selection of cotton shaker-stitch sweaters that are so high quality for their pretty affordable prices! I got this turtleneck in November of 2016 and I kid you not, I wear it at least once or twice a week, all winter long, and have for the last three winters. Still going strong! And the best part? It’s not dry-clean-only, which is actually why I can wear it so often. I machine wash it on the most gentle cycle and lay it flat to dry.
Like I said before, unfortunately, the black turtleneck is sold out (and the cream color they had), but it’s still available in a pretty beige color and red. And there are other colors in different styles of sweaters, too!
I had one of their navy crewneck cotton sweaters for years! I bought it on a trip out to the Hamptons when I lived in NYC and wore it a lot on the blog, too. (Nautical & Navy, Peeks of Plaid, Weekend Escape to Newport, Santa Baby, Birk Bandwagon)
If you’re a sweater girl, like me 🙋🏼♀️, it’s a great time to scoop up some of these classic styles on major sale. They definitely don’t go out of style! Especially this high-low turtleneck style that does a great job of covering your bum in leggings and skinny jeans. (And next year when the black comes back in stock, I’ll be sure to let you know immediately. Promise!)
And back to the start of this post, my friend, Kelly, borrowed this sweater from me when we were in Colorado over New Year’s Eve and promptly bought it the next day. It’s seriously the best! It’s the perfect oversized fit.
Here are a few more styles that are still available — and deeply discounted!
PS: If you decide to order one (or a few!), they have free shipping + free return, plus you can get 20% off your first purchase if you sign up for their email list! (just scroll to the bottom of the website!)
PS: Did you know you can get your Away suitcases monogrammed? I love the added personal touch to my new carry-on. (I went with white paint with a gray background to make it pop!) FYI: This is the “Bigger Carry-On” size! (You can see my post about Away luggage here!)
