I really never thought this day would come…
I own a pair of Birkenstocks. Even when these were popular in middle school, I always hated them. I thought they were for hippies, and that was so not my style. I mean, I used to primarily wear matching top-bottom outfit sets (by choice) and would even match my socks to said matching outfits in grade school. Needless to say, wearing cork-bed sandals with giant buckles wasn’t in my style repertoire.
But for whatever reason, I’ve come around. I didn’t give into the trend last summer, but when I saw that they were back this summer with lots of fun colors and finishes, I decided to give them a whirl! I mean, if J.Crew can get behind them, I can, too. I am in-love with the copper / rose gold metallic pair, but they’re sold out everywhere in my size. While I was on my mad shoe-hunt, I found a great selection of Birkenstocks in lots of different colors and styles at Zappos and decided to go with this metallic pebbled leather pair.
We all know I’m not very boho, but I gave my best take on “festival fashion” a few weekends ago when everyone was at Coachella. Birkenstocks and a chambray dress, balanced with a navy sweater (it’s not that warm in NYC yet), some fun jewelry, and my trusty navy crossbody bag.
This chambray dress was a little bit shorter than expected (and I’m wearing a size up) so I won’t be wearing it with wedges, but it will be great for low-key weekends in the city this summer and perfect for beachy weekend getaways! If you’re looking for a chambray dress that can be dressed up, too, this dress looks so cute — under $100 and free shipping & free returns!
What’s your take on the Birkenstock trend?

Those are so cute, I’ve seen that pebble finish in a sort of shimmery black as well. I’ve just bought a pair of Arizonas in the gold metallic and I absolutely LOVE them, although the Gizeh is my favorite style.
I had birkenstock clogs in high school like everyone else did and honestly they were super comfy I still have them. I have bad feet.. my feet hurt all the time and I need support. I can’t just wear any sandals so I bought the Birkenstock Gizeh sandal. They are incredible! I’m in love. I think I’m going to get an almost nude pair so they’re more subtle and less clunky. I was never a big fan of the buckle sandals but your pebbled silvery ones look so much less harsh than the traditional black/brown buckled ones. I don’t even consider them boho they’re just comfy supportive and necessary at least for my grandma feet.
Question for you Emily (and Jess too!) – what is the fit like? I know they use European sizing, but I’ve read that even when you find the correct “translated” size for your foot, it’s still a little of. I’d prefer to order some online. I’m a straight-up 8.5, should I be sizing up a bit or down? I appreciate any insight 🙂
Hi Renee! I’m also a tried & true 8.5 and the 39 fits *perfectly* Hope this helps!
Yes, it does! Thanks!
I have had the same feelings towards Birkenstocks that you did!!!! They have just never been my style! I do love the new fabrics and colors that are out now. I don’t know if I’ll make the jump and buy any but I love how you styled them!

I recently got a pair as well but I totally have next to no clue how to walk in them haha. (I mostly wear flats/sneaks). You rock them so well tho so this is inspiring for me to try harder. x|

Hi Alex! I TOTALLY know what you mean! I was telling Hallie that they were definitely an adjustment to walk in because they are wider than most of my shoes. Here’s to hoping we get the hang of it soon!
I’m not a fan of Birks but I love your dress! Very cute!

I have been in a love/hate relationship with these shoes since they first started coming back in style. The best way I can describe them is that they remind me of a puppy that is so ugly, it’s cute. hahaha! I sort of think they are hideous, and I also sort of really want a pair! It’s an evil little cycle. I like the ones you chose, and I think if I ever decide to get a pair I’ll go for metallic 🙂
