Three of my college besties are coming in town this weekend and I’m so excited to catch up and have a girls weekend! Much, much needed.
Getting dressed to go out in this frigid cold is always a challenge… You want to look cute, but you don’t want to freeze your butt off. (And just so we’re all on the same page — you definitely don’t want to be that girl that’s not wearing tights or a coat!)
Back in the college days, this was a real challenge. Our bars on campus rarely had coat checks… I hope they’ve changed that by now. Leaving our apartment and sprinting to the bar without our coats (just our booze blankets) was a regular occurrence in the winter months. I shiver just thinking about it! But when you would bring out a coat, it was very likely that it would get ruined, get stolen, or another drunk girl would get mixed up and grab yours instead of hers by accident. I definitely don’t miss that part of college!
Nowadays, most bars in NYC have some form of a coat check so this really isn’t an issue. THANK GOODNESS. However, figuring out the proper outfit is still a challenge. A cute skirt with tights and a form-fitting long-sleeved top is always a go-to for me. (An example of that here.) But when I’m looking to keep it a little bit more on the casual side (more often than not), I always reach for a pair of black skinny jeans. You can’t go wrong!
Even though I’m always one to error on the side of looking like a librarian in a bar (maybe that’s why I’m still single..), I keep it even more buttoned up in the dead of winter. When it’s this freaking cold (currently feels like -9 degrees Fahrenheit as I type this), layers are an absolute must for me! Layering for a night out without looking like abominable snowman can be tough, but I think I’ve found a semi-chic go-to. The last time I was headed out with the girls, I wore a simple black silky top, a white blazer, and layered a faux fur vest on top. Add black booties and a fresh white clutch and you’re good to go! It’s nice and warm, but still mindful of style.

You look cute and totally bar appropriate! I like!
I lost soooo many coats exactly like you described (except AFTER college!). Of course the other girl’s coat was NEVER nicer than mine.
You are one well dressed librarian, love the way you layered!
It’s almost spring here (70 degrees some days!) but I love seeing your cute wintery outfits. I love this vest and wish I had more chances to wear mine. Our winter is really just November – January.

SUCH a cute outfit! I can never seem to pull off a fur vest… I always feel like it over takes my outfit but you wear it so well and make it look so chic!
I totally relate to your coat/ college dilemma… I remember those days and it’s crazy to think of what we wore out in public in the name of style in 0 degree weather! Yikes!
Wow I love everything about this look!! You have the best style and were the inspiration for starting my own fashion focused blog, http://www.littlepieceofchic.com
I’d love it if you checked it out and gave me some advice!

HAHAHA “error on the side of looking like a librarian in a bar” — girl, the humor in your posts is DEFINITELY what keeps me following your fashion blog over so many others. Thanks for making me smile on a Monday morning!
…. Also, I am sure you never look like a librarian in a bar! haha
