When I worked for a personal styling company right after college (before I moved to New York), I learned all about the “third piece.” If you’re not familiar, it’s the finishing piece that completes your outfit. If your top and bottoms are your first and second pieces (the foundation of your outfit), your third piece is the cherry on top. This can be a blazer, vest, scarf, sweater, or even a cool accessory that pulls your outfit together (like a hat, piece of jewelry, etc.). Most often, though, at least in the midwest, it’s a jacket or a blazer.
And before you lose your cool with me for mentioning fall in July (believe me, it drives me INSANE when I see people start talking about the next season so far in advance), I can’t help the retail cycles. I’m sharing this post and then not another peep about fall out of me until later in September. Promise!
I picked out three jackets for the end of the year from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. One sherpa jacket, one long-line lighter wool coat, and a cool two-tone plaid blazer that’s perfect for going back to the office. Here’s a little peek at how I would style them…
Halogen Sage Green Long Wool Coat
Sage green seems to be one of the main colors of the moment! I know I’ll be wearing this topper quite a bit. (It also comes in camel and grey if green isn’t your thing.) I love how it’s not too heavy… Makes it the perfect piece to toss on during those months where the weather can’t make up it’s mind. I styled it over a monochromatic all-white outfit, imagining it for that summer-to-fall transition.

Mixed Media Plaid Blazer Jacket
I am obsessed with this blazer! Everything about it… The fun two-tone plaid that gives it some interest, the shoulder pads that make for a flattering silhouette, the longer length. It’s a keeper! It’s pretty thick so you can get away with wearing it as a jacket, too.

Treasure & Bond Sherpa Jacket
I styled this sherpa bomber-like jacket two ways! One dressed up a bit with booties, and one pared down with sneakers. It’s so soft and snuggly, and such a fun piece for fall.
