I stopped into the Nordstrom on Michigan Avenue on Friday to shop the Anniversary Sale in person, and I was shocked by how picked over the store already was considering it was the first day of Early Access. There were a lot of cute things I saw online that weren’t available in store, and a few pieces I would have bought if they had my size in store. There were also a lot of things I did not like at all… And I’ll show you those, too.
A lot of these pieces I tried on are now sold out online, but keep checking back… Returns are crazy during the sale, and I’m almost certain Nordstrom reserves stock for when the sale launches to the public this Friday, July 19th!
For reference with sizing, I’m 5’5” and normally a size 4.
And as an update, you can see a video of most of these pieces in my Nordstrom highlight on Instagram!
Leopard Print Coat | $129.90 (regularly $195) | Wearing a Small (TTS)
If only I needed another leopard coat! I was absolutely obsessed with this, and I thought the quality was great for the price. It’s such a great neutral leopard print. If you don’t have a leopard coat already, you might need this one!
Blackwatch Plaid Coat | $199.90 (regularly $300) | Wearing a Small, but it was too big. Definitely size down, I needed a XS.
OBSESSED WITH THIS COAT, TOO! These were two of my favorite pieces in the whole sale. If they would have had an XS in store, I would have bought it, but I now have it in my cart to order online. I used to have a blackwatch plaid coat (you can see it on the blog here), but ended up getting rid of it in a purge because it was less versatile with the toggles, and this one is the perfect replacement.
BB Dakota Plaid City Blazer | $64.90 (regularly $98) | Wearing a Small
The material on this is pretty thin! Almost a duster-like material. There were a lot of plaid blazers in the sale, and this one was definitely the best. Would be cute at work with a tee, jeans, and heels on Casual Friday!
Treasure & Bond Plaid Blazer | $65.90 (regularly $99) | Wearing a XS – Runs big, size down.
I thought the fit of this was so boxy and weird throughout the shoulders, not a fan.
Chelsea 28 Plaid Duster Jacket | $65.90 (regularly $99) | Wearing a Small
Cute at first glance, but it’s unlined and feels pretty cheap. Since it’s not lined and you have to roll the sleeves, the underside of the material shows and again, looks cheap. Pass!
These are are the only jackets I would have considered buying from this trip to the dressing room!
Halogen Wrap Peplum Top | $49.90 (regularly $79) | Wearing a Small
LOVED THIS! Apologies that you can’t see the bottom of this fully, but I didn’t have a pair of pants that I could put on with this in the dressing room at the time. 🤪
This is such a great top for work!! It has a snap closure at the chest so you don’t have to worry about being exposed, and it has a slight peplum that’s super flattering. Wear it with a pencil skirt, jeans, slim-fit pants, etc. It comes in a variety of other colors and patterns, too!
Chelsea 28 Turtleneck Sheath Dress | $49.90 (regularly $79) | Wearing a Small
I wasn’t sure if I loved this at first, but it grew on me as I was trying things on! (I’m wearing it in black in all of the coat photos above!) I thought maybe the fit was weird through the mid-section, but I actually grew tolike how it’s not too fitted. The ruching was definitely flattering and creates the illusion of an hourglass shape. The top was definitely very fitted through the shoulders so I couldn’t have gone down a size. I think it would be a great work dress, since it’s not too form-fitting. The material has a lot of stretch to it! I only saw the black and burnt orange in store, but the green looks nice online, too. I think it’s a great value for the price!
This blazer had some flecks of orange in it, so I just wanted to show it styled with the burnt orange dress!
The only things I would buy from this dressing room sesh!
Rag & Bone Black Skinny Jeans | $129.90 (regularly $195) | Wearing a 27
Hated the lower “mid” rise on these, not a fan. I also tried these on (they were a higher rise), but they were too big throughout the waist in my regular size.
Frame Leopard Print Jeans | $149.90 (reguarly $225) | Wearing a 27
I basically just tried these on for shits and giggles. Who remembers the Current/Elliott leopard print jeans we all had in 2011/2012?! 😂 I used to wear them constantly, you can see them on the blog here.
I will say, though, the fit on these was great! I loved the ultra high-rise fir. They were actually very slimming even though they were printed, and they had great stretch! They were not as cropped on me as they look on the model.
Frame High Rise Skinny | $139.90 (regularly $210) | Wearing a 27
These were too big in the waist and somehow also wedgie inducing, not a fan.
Good American ‘Good Legs’ Jeans | $112.90 (regularly $169) | Wearing a 27
Hands down, the best jeans I tried on in the sale! They’re the perfect everyday skinny. Great stretch, super flattering, great high rise. Love them! If you need a new pair of skinnies, try these.
Madewell Demi Boot | $84.90 (regularly $128) | Wearing a 27
Wayyyy too big in the waist. Would definitely need to size down.
Paige Hoxton Skinnies | $139.90 (regularly $209) | Wearing a 27
I got a pair of black Paige Hoxton skinnies in the sale two years ago (in this post) and I still have and wear them a lot! You want to make sure to buy them very snug because they do stretch with wear. Great high rise, great stretch.
The best two pairs of jeans, IMO!
Gal Meets Glam Dress | $118.90 (regularly $178) | Wearing a 2
I’m usually a 4 in her dresses, but they were sold out of the 4. The 2 surprisingly fit, though! (Was definitely snug throughout the shoulders and waist, but not uncomfortably so. I just generally prefer a looser fit!) So I’d order your regular size unless you like a snug fit, but if you’re in between sizes, go down.
This one is great because you can wear it now and later. Would be cute with a moto jacket and booties this fall!
Nike Sports Bra | $25.90 (regularly $35) | Wearing a Small (would go up to a Medium for sure!)
I have a few of these sports bras in Mediums, but they didn’t have a Medium in store, so I grabbed the small to try on. Still fit, but was veryyyyy snug. (And I have a very flat chest.) So def size up!
Zella Leggings | $38.90 (reguarly $59) | Wearing a Small
Loved the color of these leggings! The high-rise fit is perfect. They come in black, too!
ALO Jacket | $124.90 (regularly $188) | Wearing a Medium, would definitely need a Small
In my opinion, I thought the quality of this jacket felt pretty cheap for the price!
Topshop Ribbed Dress | $35.90 (regularly $55) | Wearing a US 8
So Topshop sizing is always confusing AF. I’m normally a size 4, but I go up to a US Size 6 in Topshop. So for this dress, I went up another size because I didn’t want it to be too form fitting. And honestly, I think that’s the key! I thought it was unbelievably flattering! The adjustable self-tie belt makes it easy to adjust for your body shape. I loved the burnt orange color with my hair color and skin tone, too.
ASTR Lace Dress | $58.90 (regularly $89) | Wearing a Small, but need a Medium (definitely size up!)
I have this dress in black so I wanted to try it on in store to show you! (You can see it on the blog here and here.) You have to size up… I’m wearing a small in this photo (without a bra) and I couldn’t get it zipped up at all. (Not even close!) My black one is a medium and it’s even snug. So if you have boobs, I would go up two sizes probably.
I absolutely loved the lavender color, it reminded me of this pretty Monique Lhuillier dress I wore to a gala a few months back.
Row A Floral Dress | $35.90 I believe… | Wearing a Medium (def size up from normal!)
I can’t find this online, but I actually loved it in store, especially for how inexpensive it was!
Blank NYC Suede Jacket | $125.90 (regularly $188) | Wearing a Medium
I have this suede jacket in multiple colors from years past and I love them! The quality is great. I’m wearing a Medium here and it’s a bit oversized, but great for sweaters and if you want it to zip. If you never want to zip it and don’t want it to be as boxy, I’d stick with your normal size instead of sizing up. So cute for wearing over dresses!
Blank NYC Teddy Coat | $64.90 (regularly $98) | Wearing a Small
Size-wise, the small is perfect and kind of snug. If you want it more boxy, size up. I wanted to love this so much because I love how it’s cropped, but the material just looks cheap AF. Wouldn’t recommend.
Topshop Gingham Blazer | $69.90 (regularly $110) | Wearing a 8, definitely need a 6.
I was so so so bummed they didn’t have my size in this! I need a 6, the US 8 was way too boxy. Such a fun statement piece for a pretty inexpensive price!
Topshop Plaid Blazer | $69.90 (regularly $110) | Wearing a US 6, perfect fit.
Loved this blazer! It felt more substantial than the BB Dakota one above, but the color is less versatile since it has some blue in it. I’d recommend either of them though!
Like I said, there are a lot more items online that I like and wanted to try on, but unfortunately they were just not in store. I thought about ordering a bunch of things to see how I liked them in person, but realistically, I’d probably end up returning most of it, so this is most likely going to be it from me in terms of Nordstrom sale coverage!
If you’ve ordered anything and loved it, I’d love for you to share your finds and a mini review in the comments below so we can all check those out, too! 🙂
