Snack Attack

When it comes to my eating habits, I’m a total grazer. I need to be eating all throughout the day or I get majorly hangry. If I haven’t had a little something within the last three hours, beware.

Picture yourself with these eating habits while trying to eat healthy and manage your meal proportions. It’s not easy! I try my best to drink a bottle of water whenever a snack craving kicks in because half the time it’s just dehydration. Butย for those times whenย it’s beyond thirst, I’ve recently found my go-to snacks that are healthy, satisfying, and pre-portion-controlled!

Like many of you, 2015 started off with a boatload of resolutions. One of my biggest goals was to get my eating habits in check and cook most of my meals at home. Living in New York City, it’s so much easier to order Seamless or to get takeout for lunch and dinner. But I’ve made grocery shopping a weekly habit and I’m actually enjoying getting some use out of my kitchen!

Along with my eating-at-home habits, I also made a pretty big lifestyle change and cut most of the coffee out of my diet. (More on that to come!) I used to grab a few snack bars for the day while in line at Starbucks for my morning coffee, but since I’m making my coffee at home, I’ve been bringing snacks to work each day.

Since I was on a “only buy food at the grocery store” kick for the first week of the month, I tried to make my own trail mix to bring to work. I bought mini snack bags for portion control, a bag of nakedย popcorn, a bag of gluten free pretzels, a bag of almonds, and a bag of edamame. I mixed it all up and portioned it out into my teeny tiny little bags and took two bags to work with me, one for the AM one for the PM. Well let me just tell you — all of those ingredients add up to A WHOLE LOT OF TRAIL MIX. I ate the same-exact-snack, twice a day, for almost two weeks until it was gone. Bland was an understatement. Very little flavor, no variety. I still found myself having snack cravings, especially for sweets, even after I finished both of my bags.

Meet Nourish Snacks. I can’t get enough! Each perfectly portioned bag is under 200 calories and naturally gluten and dairy free. No GMOs. No artificial anything. You can actually read and understand all of the ingredients on the label.

And you guys, the best part — THEY ARE SO FREAKING GOOD. My biggest battle now is not eating my entire supply in one sitting! Portion control is me allowing myself to only bring two packs alongย for the day.

healthy superbowl snacks

I even served Holy Habenero and Almond to Cherries at my little Superbowl get-together!

But back to snacking…ย These snacks have seriously changed the game! I packed them for both of my trips in January and was thrilled to not have to troll the airport to tryย to find a decently healthy snack. (Avoiding the smell of Auntie Anne’s pretzels is a different dilemma.)

There are people that always have gum or hand sanitizer in their purse. And there are the people that always seem to have some type of produce in their handbag. (I’m looking at you, Hallie.) Well, I guess I am now the girl that always has a few snack packs in her bag. What can I say?
I’m always packin’.

Let’s talk flavors, shall we?ย While I’m no expert, I’m pretty sure I’ve tried almost every single one.

I’m obsessed with every popcorn flavor — Miss Popular (dark chocolate + half-popped popcorn kernels), Mr. Popular (half-popped popcorn kernels), and Hot & Popular (spicy peanuts + half-popped popcorn kernels).

A few of my other favorites — PB Jammin’ (peanuts + berries), Honey Bee Good (honey-roasted chickpeas), Cocoa-Nut Crush (toasted coconut, almonds, dark chocolate), Monkey Love (chocolate granola bites), Granny’s Apple Pie (cinnamon apples + walnuts), andย Cashew Colada (pineapple, coconut, cashews).

And since I’ve been spicing it up in the kitchen, I’ve found a few concoctions with Nourish Snacks that I love. If you’re appetite is as big as mine, I’m sure you can relate to the fact that a container of yogurt is just never enough in the morning. I need some substance, people! Don’t get me wrong, I love my Chobani, but I’ve found a way to kick it up a notch and make it become a lot more filling. Cocoa Loco mixed into a Strawberry Chobani. Coconuts for You mixed into a Key Limeย Chobani. Berry’d Treasure mixed into a Vanilla Chobani. So good!

I tried Nourish but found that it was too pricey for my liking. I subscribe to Graze box regularly and I get Nature Box like 3x a year. I also have a giant tub of trail mix and I try to have a Chobani yogurt every day at work but I admit I’m off my Chobani game lately and that’s a grocery shopping issue. Nourish is still great because it’s only a little more $ than vending machine food and a lot healthier/simply better source of energy which is how I justify all of this.

I subscribe to Naturebox and have the shipments sent to my office. You’re able to select your snacks each month. They offer a variety of snacks including gluten free items. The snacks aren’t individually packaged, but I keep a Pampered Chef (#bestmeasuringcupever) measuring cup in my drawer for portion control. On a separate note, the customer service is phenomenal and you can opt to skip a box if your snack supply hasn’t dwindled. I totally recommend a trial box!
