Watching the Oscars Red Carpet on Sunday night and seeing some of the lovely, long sequin gowns (Saoirse Ronan in Calvin Klein was a favorite!) is actually what got me thinking of this dress, and simultaneously when I realized I never actually posted it on the blog. I teased this outfit on Instagram a few weeks ago and had it queued up to go live, but that was the fateful week that my website crashed. In all of the craziness trying to get the site up and running and then shifting gears to launch the first delivery of my spring clothing collection, these photos totally got lost in the mix. Oops! Better late than never, right?
I wore this sequin caftan dress a few weeks ago to Snowball, a huge event in Chicago thrown by the Junior Council to benefit the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital. It was one of the rare 40-something-degree days in January so I got away with not wearing tights… Hallelujah!
I actually bought this dress without a specific destination in mind. I’m a firm believer that you should almost always buy a fabulous dress that fits you when you find it, regardless if you have an event to wear it to on your calendar. Especially if you have a lifestyle where you need a few fancy cocktail dresses, it makes life much less stressful down the road! How many times have you been panicked because a last-minute party popped up, or finding a new dress for an upcoming event slipped your mind and you have limited time to shop for a few options? My guess is more than once!
When a few friends and I decided to buy tickets to Snowball, I knew this sequin dress would be perfect. It was sitting in my closet just waiting to be worn. Buy the dress and the party will come… or something like that! 😉
With award season having just wrapped up and high school proms and college formals on the horizon, I figured now is as good of a time as any to share a few sparkly special occasion dresses. Who says you have to stash the sequins after the holidays?!
Here are a few of my favorites…
I had a heck of a time figuring out what shoes and accessories looked best with this dress. These matte, dusty mauve sequins look so incredibly luxe in person, but they’re a really unique color and tricky to match. Since there’s a bit a pale purple undertone, I really wanted to pair the dress with a blush pink clutch, but I realized I didn’t have one of those. (I’ve since gotten this one!) So when I was location scouting for these photos, I knew a pale pink backdrop would be perfect. (This pretty wall is outside of the Anthropologie in Lincoln Park in Chicago, FYI!)
Since a blush clutch was out of the question, I decided on my navy Gucci bag. You can never go wrong with navy! The crossbody strap was all wrong with the sequin sash, so I just maneuvered a little strap tucking situation. Voila!
