Black & Brown

by Jessica Sturdy on January 10, 2013

Just like navy & black, black & brown is one of those fictitious rules. Wear the two colors together, and wear them often!

After I got dressed on this particular morning, I wanted to grab a pink clutch and run out the door. Pink would be the perfect pop of color for this leopard, brown, and black outfit!

When I opened up my tub of clutches under my bed and realized I don’t have a pink clutch, I’m pretty sure I mumbled something along the lines of, “How in the F*CK do I not have a pink clutch?” There are times that I have these WTF moments about my wardrobe and think that I am a bad shopper. Certain key items that I NEED to have. Like realizing I don’t have a pair of leopard pumps. I have leopard booties and leopard flats out the actual you-know-what, but no pumps. Guess I have an excuse to shop??

Anyway, grabbed the next best pop-of-color-clutch in my tub… Mint.

J.Crew Leopard Shirt / Gibson Tweed Blazer / Gap Skinny Pants / Ann Taylor Glitter Heels

Coach Watch (OLD, like high-school-graduation-present-old, but they still make it! That’s what I call a Classic! Now they make it in gold, too!)

J.Crew Link Bracelet / gifted Sequin Necklace (new for spring! bracelet version here, necklace should be available soon!) / ASOS Mint Clutch (similar)

Thanks for always taking my pictures, Tracy!

I just snagged a hot pink clutch on major clearance at The Limited the other day because I was in the same boat! Loving this outfit combination on you…especially those shoes! :)

Sarah January 10, 2013 at 9:40 am

Great outfit! I love how you paired these all together. The leopard shirt is the perfect transition piece!

Love this look! Black and brown/tan is one of my fave combos. I feel like the resurgence of leopard print has revolutionized the whole black/brown thing. Also – those shoes are too awesome!

LOVE this outfit…the combination of leopard, brown and mint looks great! I have those WTF moments in my closet a lot…when you envision something looking so great but then one piece is missing! I’m always looking for an excuse to shop :)

Agi January 10, 2013 at 11:50 am

Love this outfit, especially the blazer and the shoes. I hate when that happens, you think you have something and you realize you don’t. It sucks. Hope you find a great pink clutch.
If you get a chance, check out my 30 in 30 post.

Erin @ Loop Looks January 10, 2013 at 12:15 pm

This is one of my favorite outfits of yours that I’ve seen lately! Totally going to pin it and then stalk the J. Crew website in the hopes that the shirt comes back in stock. I had it on my wishlist for the holidays but it had already sold out, I guess. Bummer!

Lauren January 10, 2013 at 12:21 pm

love the shoes and that blazer! i love shoes with a chunkier heel, they are way more comfortable!

Alyssa January 10, 2013 at 12:21 pm

Such a gorgeous tailored blazer. I love the fabric!

Liz January 10, 2013 at 12:41 pm

This outfit is so great!

megBdesign January 10, 2013 at 12:57 pm

Love. This. Color. Combo! I do agree that a pink clutch might’ve “popped” more – but haven’t we ALL had those WTF I DON’T OWN THAT?! moments whilst dressing ourselves in the morning? I think so 😉

Megan January 10, 2013 at 1:07 pm

Your shoes are so cute! I also love your blazer. Very cute outfit.

Anngelik January 10, 2013 at 1:32 pm

I’ve really been trying to embrace the black and brown lately – I really like the different shades of your outfit. And the mint clutch is the perfect pop of color!

Michelle January 10, 2013 at 2:47 pm

Black & brown together always scares me but you pull it off so well! Love that jacket & those shoes! The “old school” Coach watch is adorable too.

Amy January 10, 2013 at 3:26 pm

I am in LOVE with those shoes!

amanda January 10, 2013 at 4:25 pm

agreeeeeee agree agree! my most versatile boots are black and brown. they allow you to make bolder or at the very least, less monochromatic choices especially in the accessories dept.

Zoe January 10, 2013 at 4:34 pm

Just found your blog through pinterest, love it! and love black and brown!

Tara January 10, 2013 at 6:07 pm

I’m dying over your shoes…gorgeous!

Jacqueline January 10, 2013 at 7:13 pm

I like the touch of the mint clutch against the black and brown!

Lauren // January 10, 2013 at 7:40 pm

HAHA I literally had a similar thought the other day except it was for a pair of nude pumps. I guess I online “shop” so much i swore I ordered a pair.
P.S. you’re not alone with the swearing… I literally have to make a conscious effort not to swear on my blog every day

Tracy January 10, 2013 at 9:06 pm

I just stumbled across your blog and I had to leave a comment to let you know how much I love all of your style. You are amazingly chic.

Q January 10, 2013 at 9:51 pm

What do you mean you realized you don’t have leopard pumps? What about your J.Renee ones with the sweet bow you posted about for Thanksgiving, if I remember correctly? I thought those were adorable!

Jessica Sturdy January 10, 2013 at 10:03 pm

Yes, I do have those. But those aren’t a true leopard print, in my opinion. I also prefer leopard print shoes to be calf-hair. :)

Q January 12, 2013 at 2:41 am

I hear you about the calf-hair. They fit the brown & black bill nicely, though!

Chelsea January 10, 2013 at 10:32 pm

The glitter heels are to die for! I don’t have a pair of leopard shoes at all, I’m so ready to invest.

alex January 10, 2013 at 11:19 pm

those shoes are to die for, love the pop of mint, even though you didn’t have pink I think it looks great!

Stephanie (Glam Slam!) January 11, 2013 at 2:14 am

Jessica, let me just say – the leopard print, sequin heels and pop of bright mint color is just utterly awesome! I find myself very fashionably inspired at the moment!

Stephanie :)

Olivia January 11, 2013 at 10:07 am

This whole outfit is so fabulous. I especially love that animal print top with that blazer. So pretty!

Stephanie S January 11, 2013 at 11:25 am

I have that blouse too and I love it! Leopard print is the new black 😉

Molly Galler January 11, 2013 at 1:20 pm

LOVE those pumps! So fun. How do you not have a pink clutch? I would have dropped an F bomb too. I jumped on the hot pink Kate Spade bag when the Bryce Dallas Howard ad campaign came out.

Amy Shaughnessy January 11, 2013 at 4:12 pm

This is such a classic look and those shoes are definitely a fun added touch. Love this look!

Erin January 11, 2013 at 7:14 pm

I love your blazer! I have been looking for a great timeless one like that! How do you like the fit of it?

Jessica Sturdy January 11, 2013 at 7:27 pm

I love the fit of these Gibson blazers! I have two of them. I like the cutaway lines in the front and the longer length in the back!

Laura January 11, 2013 at 7:20 pm

I hate when I have those moments. Sadly they happen all too often!!

Kaitlin January 12, 2013 at 12:47 am

The shoes are beyond amazing!

Petite Adventures January 12, 2013 at 3:47 pm

Love this look – so chic!

AJ January 12, 2013 at 5:23 pm

I used to hate black/brown and black/navy combos. But I totally love black and brown together now! Love this look. And good luck with the pink clutch search!

Adventures in Dressmaking January 12, 2013 at 8:01 pm

Ooh, looove those glitter colorblock pumps! Also love black + brown together. It’s the only way I can wear black without feeling too goth with my pale skin, haha!

Hip June 26, 2013 at 9:00 am

I feel like the resurgence of leopard print has revolutionized the whole black/brown thing.

Catherine November 3, 2014 at 4:30 am

So wonderful!
I am looking all over for that J Crew blouse. I have begged J Crew to re issue it.
Jessica, please keep styling it for us on your blog. Once more please?
I hope too J Crew will get the picture that this shirt needs a revival!
Love your look,
On the hunt.
